What is the Ghibli image trend?
The Ghibli image trend or Studio Ghibli style photo trend"—any name you can pick—means the same. So what's the Ghibli image trend trending all over the internet? Generated AI is converting simple images, mainly converting common people's images into Studio Ghibli-style photos. Here are some glimpse s of Ghibli style photos.
What is Studio Ghibli?
Ghibli art is an old Japanese animation style where every scene is drawn by hand. These scenes have soft colors and dreamy landscapes, which never failed to make their fans emotionally attached and to take every piece of it.On 15th June, 1985, Hayao Miyazaki
(main artist and one of the directors), Isao Takahata (director), and producer Toshio Suzuki founded Studio Ghibli (Animation Company ) . In this studio, along with Hayao Miyazaki, many illustrators create anime scenes. And the most surprising thing is, in this 21st century, these Japanese people are still drawing every anime scene in hand-detailed. They refused to use any artificiality in their work. Hayao Miyazaki's art , owner of Ghibli art, is defined by the fact that behind each frame is the labor of a human illustrator, often Hayao Miyazaki himself. In this art style, some anime scenes took many months or a year to create just to show the pure emotion through it. And that's what made every anime released by Studio Ghibli special to their fans. Spirited Away (2001),
created by the Studio Ghibli team, won the first non-English-language animated film to win the Academy Award. Later, The Boy and the Heron (2023) won an Oscar.
Some famous anime by Studio Ghibli are –
"My Neighbor Totoro,"
"The Wind Rises,"
"Grave of the Fireflies,"
"Princess Mononoke,"
"Kiki's Delivery Service,"
"Howl's Moving Castle,"
and
so on.
What's wrong with Ghibli image trend?
People are dividing themselves into two groups for this trend topic. One is the artistic group, who are not supporting this Ghibli trend and standing for Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, and on the other side, the non-artistic group, who are posting these generated AI-converted Ghibli images. So let's discuss some thoughts of them:
Artistic group:
They are against this trend. Why? They are saying that this is an insult to an artist, and Miyazaki is a talented anime illustrator. AI took his works without his (Miyazaki's) consent mostly and trained itself. Now it is producing simple images in Ghibli style. So this is disrespectful. It took decades for Studio Ghibli to establish this art form and this new technology, without any feeling, any emotions, converting these images into Miyazaki's art. They are also giving this statement: 'Thought AI is creating this art in a minute, but it will never be able to give those attachments, those feelings, because only Miyazaki can do this.
Non-artistic group:
Many people are in this group. They are just for random social media trend doing this. posting multiple images and converting them into Ghibli images.
Even Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is saying, "Please chill on generating images...our team needs sleep," so we can see how much people are going crazy in this trend. The scary part is that AI is consuming all the fields from classroom to corporate to manufacturing and also slowly eating the artistic field.
So the question arises, "What will humans do in future days?" "Will they be the slaves of technology after losing their creativity?" Hayao Miyazaki, about inserting AI in the 2016 NHK documentary series by Kaku Arukawa, said, "I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate. This technology is in my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself."
